Jumping the Shark

If someone told you that they would pay you for doing something you enjoy, would you jump at the opportunity to pursue that endeavor with vigor? Would you stand firm in your convictions that allowing advertising on your website might be considered “selling out”? Is it possible to have the best of both worlds?

It has been brought to my attention recently that I could be making money from my blog by simply adding links via Amazon.com’s Amazon Associates program. Not one to shy away from new ideas to keep my hobbies afloat, I paid a visit to Amazon.com and educated myself on this unique program.

Basically, I can set up banners or links on my website that direct visitors to Amazon.com and for the next twenty-four hours I will be paid a small percentage of anything the visitor purchases. For example: if you were interested in becoming a sexy vigilante and you were searching for Fuzzy Handcuffs Metal W Keys – Assorted Color to help you restrain those heartbreaking criminals, you would simply click on the link provided above.

If I really want to capture my reader’s attention, Amazon offers banners of various sizes designed for specific categories, in order to draw more traffic to their site. In this case, if I had mentioned what type of camera I took a certain picture with, I could offer a link with a discount specific to the camera department.

I rarely do product reviews, but I will occasionally mention products in my normal blog writing routine. In order to prevent myself from becoming too much of a pusher, I have set up a page devoted to supporting my website via the Amazon Associates program. The page link can be found here, or by selecting it on the header menu on my home page.

My hope is that this entrepreneurship does not turn off my visitors, but rather it gives them a discreet tool with which to support my passions.
